FAQs
Custom Design + Fabrication Process
Custom fabrication is a collaborative process. At de stijl FORMS, we believe clarity at the outset leads to better outcomes in the build. The questions below outline how we work, what to expect, and how we guide projects from concept through fabrication and installation.
As a custom steel fabrication studio based in Portland and Hood River, Oregon, we work with residential and commercial clients throughout the Portland metro area and the Columbia River Gorge. Our role is not only to fabricate, but to help clients navigate design decisions, material considerations, timelines, and execution with confidence.
What types of projects do you take on?
de stijl FORMS specializes in custom architectural and functional elements fabricated primarily in steel, with complementary work in wood and aluminum when appropriate. Projects range from railings, built-ins, and site-specific elements to furniture, fixtures, and structural details.
Each project is approached individually. Rather than offering off-the-shelf solutions, we focus on work that benefits from thoughtful design, precise fabrication, and intentional execution.
Who do you work with?
We work directly with homeowners, as well as architects, designers, builders, and developers. Some clients arrive with detailed drawings and specifications, while others begin with an idea or a problem to solve.
In all cases, we act as a technical and creative partner—helping translate intent into a buildable, durable result.
What is your process like?
Our process is creative, structured, transparent, and collaborative. Projects typically move through the following stages:
Initial conversation to understand scope, goals, and constraints
Design development and technical review, including CAD when required
Material selection and fabrication planning
Fabrication and finishing
Installation or coordination with the project team
Throughout the process, we prioritize clear communication, realistic timelines, and informed decision-making. Clients are guided at each step, with an emphasis on clarity rather than complexity.
Do you help with design, or do I need drawings?
We do both.
If you have drawings or specifications, we review them for constructability and execution. If you are early in the process, we can assist with design development, proportions, materials, and technical considerations.
Our background in design and engineering-minded fabrication allows us to identify opportunities and constraints early, which helps avoid costly revisions later.
What materials do you work with?
Steel is our primary material, chosen for its strength, versatility, and longevity. We also work with wood and aluminum when a project calls for it, often in combination with steel.
Material selection is always purposeful. We help clients understand how material choice affects performance, appearance, maintenance, and long-term durability.
Where are you located, and what areas do you serve?
de stijl FORMS is based in Portland and Hood River, Oregon. We serve clients throughout the Portland metro area and the Columbia River Gorge.
For select projects, we may work beyond this region depending on scope and logistics.
What should I have prepared before reaching out?
An initial inquiry can be simple. Helpful information includes:
A general description of the project
Location
Timeline considerations
Any drawings, reference images, or inspiration
If details are still evolving, that’s okay. Part of our role is helping bring clarity to early-stage ideas.
How do you approach timelines and scheduling?
Custom fabrication requires coordination and lead time. Timelines vary depending on scope, materials, and complexity.
We provide realistic schedules upfront and communicate clearly throughout the project. Our goal is to align expectations early and avoid surprises later.
How do I get started?
The best place to start is a conversation.
Reach out through our contact page with a brief description of your project. We’ll follow up to discuss next steps, assess fit, and determine how we can best support your goals.
At de stijl FORMS, we value precision, clarity, and intention — not only in what we build, but in how we work. Our goal is to make the custom fabrication process feel considered, informed, and collaborative from start to finish.
