The Garrison House – Custom Steel Firewood Storage & Hearth Plate
The Garrison House is a custom residential project in Hood River, Oregon, featuring a fully bespoke steel firewood storage system and integrated hearth floor plate for a wood-burning stove.
Designed entirely in CAD, this project allowed for precise engineering, clean assembly, and minimal visual welding. The hearth plate was fabricated from a 5’ × 8’ sheet of ¼-inch steel and countersunk flush into the finished floor, providing both heat protection and a seamless architectural detail.
The firewood storage box—constructed from ¼-inch steel and measuring 4’ × 4’ × 22”—was formed on a press brake and assembled using a tab-and-slot interlocking system. This approach reduced welds, increased structural rigidity, and preserved a clean, minimal aesthetic. The firebox mechanically bolts to the floor plate using threaded inserts, creating a secure and serviceable installation.
All components were finished in a satin black powder coat, with black Cerakote hardware for durability and visual consistency. The final result is a highly functional, architecturally integrated steel feature that complements the home’s design while standing up to daily use.
