Bar-Height Work Tables for Artist Wendy Red Star

This project involved designing and fabricating four bar-height work tables for renowned Indigenous artist Wendy Red Star. The tables were inspired by two existing pieces she already owned, with the goal of subtly elevating the design through improved materials, detailing, and functionality—without losing the spirit of the originals.

We re-engineered the tables to be modular and flat-packable, allowing them to be easily disassembled, transported, and reassembled as needed. The frames were fabricated from steel, paired with laser-cut steel flanges for mounting heavy-duty casters, giving the tables both durability and mobility. Tabletops were constructed from birch ApplePly, providing a warm, refined contrast to the industrial steel base. All fasteners and visible hardware were upgraded to stainless steel, reinforcing both longevity and visual cohesion.

We loved this design so much that it became the foundation for one of our own shop fixtures. For our internal use, we adapted the design into a welding table by replacing the plywood surface with a ¼-inch steel top, while retaining the same modular steel base.

Working with Wendy was an incredible experience. She is a deeply inspirational artist, and knowing that these tables are used every day in her studio to create new work makes this project especially meaningful to us.
