Floating Record Shelf Installation
Custom Birch & Steel Shelving System
These shelves were designed by our very own Ashley Huckaby, beginning with a simple but powerful idea: creating a central focal point for her living room that was both functional and expressive.
Ashley wanted a place to thoughtfully display meaningful objects while also integrating a dedicated record-player station—room for vinyl, turntable, and speaker—without the piece feeling like conventional storage. After exploring several concepts together, we landed on a two-unit system, each measuring 3 × 4 feet, designed to work as a pair rather than mirror images.
The key design move was asymmetric balance. Each shelf unit shares the same overall silhouette, but every internal composition is intentionally different, creating visual tension and rhythm while still reading as a cohesive whole.
The shelves are constructed from birch plywood and appear to float in space. Structurally, they are supported by custom steel feet that run from floor to ceiling, anchoring the units without relying on the wall. The result is a shelving system that stands off the wall, lightly occupying the room and challenging traditional ideas of built-in furniture.
This piece functions as storage, display, and architectural feature all at once—anchoring the living room while leaving it open, airy, and intentional.
